In SQL Server 2008, the x64 and Itanium versions of sqlncli.msi will install the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of SQL Server Native Client. The x86 version of sqlncli.msi will only work on 32-bit Windows operating systems and will install the 32-bit version of SQL Server Native Client. You will not be able to run the 32-bit version of sqlncli.msi on a 64-bit Windows operating system.
This page contains updates providing TLS 1.2 support for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 SNAC (SQL Native Client) drivers. These updates were prioviously only available on the Microsoft Hotfix server which has since been decommissioned. To download the most recent version of the SQL Server Native Client, go to Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Feature Pack. If a previous version of SQL Server Native Client earlier than SQL Server 2012 is also installed on the computer, SQL Server Native Client 11.0 will be installed side-by-side with the earlier version. SQL Server 2008 R2 features, and optionally installs the header files needed to develop an application that uses the SQL Server Native Client API. To install Microsoft SQL 2008 and 2008 R2 TLS 1.2 SQL Native Client, run the following command from the command line or from PowerShell.

In prerelease versions of SQL Server 2008, you may find that the 32-bit version of sqlncli.msi does run on a 64-bit operating system. However, this may cause unexpected results. Use the appropriate 64-bit version of sqlncli.msi to install both the 64-bit and 32-bit version of SQL Server Native Client on your 64-bit Windows operating system.

Download SQL Server 2008 Native Client ODBC & OLEDB. Booth the ODBC driver and the OLEDB provider have been released within Microsoft SQL Server 2008 'Feature Packs'. There are different 'Feature Packs' for each SQL Server 2008 service pack version. If a previous version of SQL Server SQL Server Native Client earlier than SQL Server 2012 is also installed on the computer, SQL Server SQL Server Native Client 11.0 will be installed side-by-side with the earlier version.
